Mt. Sac Wrap Up
Mt. Sac was a great day for the OLA Cross Country Team!
Everyone who was entered in the race ran beautifully, and they should all be proud of their races today and in the years to come. Mt. Sac is the world’s largest invitational, and the course is known as being quite difficult, as the team found out. It’s a privilege and a challenge to run it, and I hope the good memories and pride last for years and years.
The 8th grade boys ran the 2 mile course in fantastic times. The field was 195 runners deep, and Luis Huerta finished in 17th place (!) with a time of 13:16, followed by Matt Juarez in 14:08, Joseph Miller in 14:43 and Diego Huerta, stepping up to run with the older kids, with a time of 16:42.
The 8th grade girls came in 174, 175 and 176 in their race, full of smiles and looking fresh. They had a hard course, and they pulled it off together as a solid group with a ton of grace!
7th grader Laura Fernandez finished the 2 mile course in a time of 20:38. This was a great race for her! David Deanda and Thomas Garcia ran a smart and strategic race together and encouraged each other the whole way. They finished 183rd and 184th, but there are no recorded times as of yet. Great job 7th graders!
Vicente Huerta ran the 1.2 6th grade course in 14:33 and finished in 22nd place!!! What a low finish, especially considering he was our only 6th grade boy out there! and the 6th grade girls ran well in their field: Katherine DeMirjyn came in at 19:07 followed by Isabelle Lee at 20:39, McKenna Lucas at 21:33 and Mary Charlotte Smith at 23:28.
For the 4th grade boys, Michael D finished the .8 mile course in 6:20, followed by brother John D in 7:18 and Ryan Anabi in 7:58, another display of great teamwork!
The 4th grade girls were are only officially scoring team, since they had at least 5 runners. They ranked 4th overall, an amazing score for OLA!!! This is great!
Breanna Harkins came in 18th, a very low finish, with a time of 6:08. Lily Miller finished in 37th place with a time of 6:37, followed by Teresa Hempen in 48th (6:51), Cori Navarro (53rd, 7:00), Hannah Miller (54th, 7:01), Makayla Iliscupidez (61, 7:24) and Julia Patronite (78th, 7:33). These are all very good and very close times, and the 4th grade worked nicely as a team!
The 3rd grade girls were amazing. This was their first time at a big running event for OLA. Emily Looney flew to an 11th place finish with a time of 6:34! She won a huge medal for this, and she looked effortless on the course. She seemed overjoyed, and even stunned (?) by her finish. It was sweet. Ryan Reyes pulled in very close behind in 28th place with a time of 7:16, followed by Jocelyn McGuire in 42nd place with a time of 7:46 and Elena Shirrell with a time of 8:38. Great teamwork 3rd graders, as that was a hard course, and it came late in the day. You were terrific!!!

Welcome to OLA Fall 2012 Cross Country
September 19, 2012
Practices have been going really well. The kids are strong runners, and we've been adding some fun to the workouts (trivia) since it's been so hot.
We ran distance on Monday, September 17th, and the kids can all run their distances. 3/4th will have to run 1/2 a mile, 4/5 will run a mile, and 7/8 will run 1/5 miles.
This upcoming Monday, Sept 24th, will be our first timed run. This is when the runners will go their full race distances and be timed. This will give us all a good benchmark.
I am working on setting up a Dual Meet with Holy Name in San Dimas and Western Christian in Claremont. THey are the only two local schools who have a team! St. Rita, St Joe Pomona, St. Joe Upland, and Sacred Heart do not have teams! I will hopefully have this figured out very soon, as this would be fun for all!
----------------------------
We only have 2 scheduled meets this season:
1) Mt Sac on October 12, 2012
2) CYO Championships on SUNDAY, OCTOBER 21, 2012 at LEGG LAKE PARK in the WHITTIER NARROWS RECREATION AREA
Details are at the bottom of this page.
*I am trying to set up a dual meet with Western Christian, Foothill Country Day and some of the Catholic Schools in our area.
If you are doing other sports this season, and you feel like you are in running shape, you are free to join our practices when you can and then come to race on October 21. This is a less intense season than Track and Field.

Practices
Practices are now scheduled for Wednesdays and Mondays, although I have been asked to move them to Mondays and Thursdays, so I will let you know our firm practice days on Wednesday, Sept 5th.
We will have our first full (not rained out, hopefully) practice on Wed., Sept. 5th.
Practices are held from 3:15 to 4:30 on our fields. Please report to Study Hall, where you can start on homework and change into your running clothes after school.
*I would like the kids to practice on hills, but we need to carpool to get to a good hill, so we might have Friday optional hill practice for those that can be driven to up to the Wilderness Park here in Claremont (about 3 miles north of school). I will keep you informed about this.
